One year after the standoff in Godzilla X MechaGodzilla, Kirryu is being repaired. Meanwhile, Mothra and the Shobojin appear and warn the Japanese Gov. to return Kirryu's skeleton back to the ocean so that its soul may rest. If they agree Mothra will grant them protection from Godzilla, but if they refuse the Shobojin cannot be sure whose side Mothra will be on. So the battle commences.

 

The high points in this film are many. Godzilla X MechaGodzilla broke a lot of ground in terms of Kaiju film action but S.O.S. takes it  and runs. The action is much better in that there aren't any cringe shots such as the big swing scene in GxMG. The special effects are very good, the best seen in a Kaiju film thus far. The score is also much better than Godzilla X MechaGodzilla's...instead of leftovers from Godzilla X Megaguiras we get some really nice marches. Mothra steals the show in much the same way Kirryu did in GxMG.

 

 

The low points have to be the script and story. Far too many cringe lines and the story is too rushed. The larvae get to Tokyo like 8 minutes after they've hatched. It's somewhat ridiculous, to rush a film this much, but given Toho aims at youngsters they can't really make it that long...it's still too rushed if you ask me.
